I bought this fifth wheel brand new in Nov. 2017. The following are the problems we have had:
1. Gas oven did not work from day one.
2. High Point residential fridge stopped working 30 days after purchase. We went 3 weeks with no fridge and we LIVE Full Time in ours.
3. The inverter had to be replaced.
4. The kitchen sink completely fell in the hole.
6. The bracket arms for the large awning were mounted crooked and the awning would not work.
5.The screws fell out of the large awning causing it to fall apart and rip the material.
6. The trim around the door to the toy hauler completely separated from the wall-twice.
7. The gray tank cut out was left in by the manufacture which then floated over the hole blocking it from draining. Had to have the tank dropped to remove it. This is a known issue with Heartland.
8. The underbelly filled with water and we had to drain it. There is a permanent sag in the under belly.
9. Both slide outs are now separating from the floor. Screws have sheared off.
10. The outdoor trashcan door does not close flush....water flooded our kitchen through the trash door during rain storm.
These are just the major issues in the 7 months we have owned it.....many other minor issue which we have fixed ourselves.
We do like the lay out. Large kitchen and decor. The side patio is awesome.

The 220RK is the smallest and lightest 5th wheel Grand Design RV has ever made and one of the smallest fifth wheels you will see on the road today. Most dealers here on RVtrader list the details incorrectly, so I will list them correctly. Most dealers list the freshwater tank as 52 gallons. This is wrong, it is actually 40 gallons. They also list the empty weight wrong, it is actually 6995 lbs. It only has a 2,000 cargo weight so fully (legally) loaded it weighs 8,995 lbs. This trailer and a few others are classified in as "Half-ton towable" but this is simply a marketing ploy and most experienced RV'ers recommend atleast a 3/4 ton to tow a 9,000 lb. trailer. I tow it with a 3/4 Superduty diesel which weighs almost as much as the trailer so it tows really well with zero sway even in high winds. Grand Design only sold about 300 of these trailers so they only produced them for 2 years, 2018 and 2019. 99% of them come with single-paned windows and the chaise couch which is terribly uncomfortable unless you're a tiny person. We ordered our 220RK in November of 2017. We custom ordered it with dual-paned windows and the optional "theatre seating" which is basically a triple recliner/couch with heat and massage and built-in cupholders. We also installed quite a few upgrades including solar, lithium batteries, a large inverter, a water softener, cell booster to name a few. We also changed out the Westlake "China bomb" tires and had a set of Goodyear Endurance tires installed. We have been traveling fulltime in this trailer (our home now) for the past 18 months and the only mechanical issue we've had is the water heater control board went bad, however Grand Design paid for a new one and we replaced the unit ourselves in about 5 minutes.
The 220RK is the perfect size for a couple with no kids or large pets. We purposely chose a trailer under 30 feet to ensure we could fit into all national and state parks and most RV parks and campgrounds. We have towed this trailer over 12,000 miles around the US several times over the past year and a half and have always been able to park it in any spot we wanted, while we watch other people with larger RVs get turned away or drive around in circles all day looking for a spot they can fit into. This trailer has a lot of storage and the tanks are basically heated since they are in the same area as the furnace. We dry camp a lot, this means out in the woods with no hookups, and we've camped in temps down to the single digits and have never had any problems with water lines or tanks freezing which like I said is due to the furnace being in the same area as the tanks and the water controls and valves. The only thing I would suggest if you buy one is replace the tires with Goodyear or Sailun (MUCH better quality than what it comes with) and upgrade the piece of junk TCL TV that comes in all the Grand Design trailers. We gave ours away to a park ranger that was super nice and we installed a Samsung 40" with a nice soundbar and subwoofer, which incidentally, fits perfectly behind the couch! Overall we've been very happy with this little fifth wheel and we would buy another Grand Design in the future.

In May of 2019 me and my family purchased a kz sportsmen 302bhk fifth wheel. everything was great at first. as experienced rv people know that the first year of a new rv can have some challenges. but now that its Feb. of 2020 my rv has been at the dealer service shop since Jan. no repairs have been done to it due to kz manufacturing denying responsibility. the problems are... first month a piece of paneling buckled loose, and the awning was coming loose from the side of the rv. within the first six months the mdf boards that have a synthetic film over them to simulate real wood in the outdoor kitchen started to swell due to the outdoor fridge defrosting and leaking while your towing it down the road. this fridge is not on an inverter so it only stays cold when the rv is plugged in. and there is more paneling coming loose on the inside of the outdoor kitchen as well. and as for a safety concern the trailer bucks very badly. as I was pulling it I had my wife take a video of the hitch and its lifting up so high that its picking my truck hitch up. I brought this to kz manufacturing's attention and they said it was normal but what I find funny is, while mine is being repaired there was another guy who had the same 302bhk as me and the bucking on his caused his trailer tongue to break and his entire front end to come apart. now to tell yall about the HEALTH CONCERN, my rv and the the guys with the broken tongue both have mold growing inside of the slides. this rv is a bunk house model and the bunk house is where my one year old baby girl sleeps. every time we went camping, very shortly after we had to take my little girl to the doctor due to her being ill. come to find out after several months of dealing with this and almost 5000.00 in doctor bills and one er visit, the doctors ran test for symptoms of mold and they linked to being exposed to heavy amounts of mold spores. so in my case iv hired a lawyer. out of owning 4 other rvs, this manufacturer is a big waste of time and money.

We purchased a new 2019 Nexus Viper 27V in February of 2021. We have now owned the unit for 4 years, during which time we have driven it 15,000 miles and camped for about 5 months. The unit has been used only by my wife and I, who are seniors and do our test to take care of our things. Unit is stored indoors at all times when not on the road. Our experience We love the floor plan and overall livability of the unit, however we have had numerous problems right from the start. The cab was leaking above the drivers visor, and the cabinetry in the entertainment center was damaged and had to be replaced.. The power inverter/charger was defective The drivers side running board literally pulled away from the body. We also had a water leak in the shower wall. Two trips to the factory “resolved” these issues, however the water leak in the shower returned six months later , this time destroying the floor of the coach which had to be entirely replaced (on my dime). Seems the connections on the back of the shower fixture (which had been “fixed” by the factory before) were installed at a 75 degrees angle (rather than the 90 they were designed for) as a result of the hot and cold lines going around the outside of a framing member under the paneling. Notching the framing board allowed me to properly install the fittings and allowed the hall wall paneling to fit flush for the first time. I also installed an inspection plate to allow access to this are in the future should it ever be needed again.. At the rear of the coach between the floor and exterior wall under the cabinets was a gap more than an inch wide opening directly to the outside. The crossover hydraulic line on the self leveling system developed a major leak-seems the hose was Not supported or tied up in any way. It dropped down on the driveshaft which quickly melted a hole in the hose, Other system hoses were also just hanging loose and had to be secured while the damaged one was being replaced. The drivers side running board is again showing cracking and in need of repair. The “recliner” was not secured to the floor, plus it could not be used to “recline” unless moved to the center of the coach. I replaced this with a wooden bench with extra storage beneath the seat. The water pump failed and had to be replaced, as did the door lock, which failed in a latched position which prevented the coach door from being opened. We are currently “on the road” for the past 4 weeks and during this trip the vinyl on both the cab seats and especially on the dinette has completely came apart with the (very) thin vinyl cracking and peeling completely off its backing-to the point that as of today approximately 30% of the vinyl is gone from the backing, plus the cushions on the dinette have collapsed, so we are basically sitting on a piece of plywood. Also, on this trip the bathroom floor has developed a “soft” spot-as I have no leak from the shower or sink it appears the black tank or toilet seal is leaking. The inverter/charger is again acting up and will need to be serviced or replaced. At this point I am looking at $5-7k in repairs at the end of this trip. Nexus has one of The best basic designs out there, but shoddy construction, a complete lack of any quality control and the use of extremely low quality materials throughout significantly degrade the product. For the record, we have camped for 25 years, have owned a fifth wheel and two travel trailers in the time and covered tens of thousands of miles in campers over the years. The Nexus, in 4 years, has had far more issues that the other three combined. We actually lived in our 5th wheel for a year while our home was being built, and then let my brother in law use it for another 10 months while his home was being built (plus 3 years of camping) and it looked nearly new inside-with zero upholstery issues. We would NOT recommend Nexus to anyone..
